Suffering in Silence: The Gender-Based Violence You Don’t Hear About

Various activists present on some insidious forms of GBV that don’t often get talked about enough: from breast-ironing to violence behind bars.

The lives, experiences, and concerns vary greatly between women and gender-diverse people around the world – but the one thing they, unfortunately, have in common is the threat of GBV in some form. From female genital mutilation (FGM), so-called “honour” killings, to breast ironing, to so-called “corrective rape,” and violence against incarcerated women – there are countless forms of GBV specific to particular regions, communities, or circumstances that don’t get the attention – and therefore the funding – required.

In this Women in Dev webinar, hear first-hand experiences on where crucial attention is needed from speakers:

Doreen Gaura (Just Detention International South Africa) who is dedicated to ending sexual abuse behind bars, Janet Mbugua (Inua Dada Foundation & Women in Dev Steering Committee) who specialises in the wellbeing of young girls, Nina Aouilk, TEDx Speaker and activist on so-called “honour killings” and founder of endhonourkillings.org, and Yvonne Chi Leina (World Pulse) who is an outspoken activist against the practice of breast ironing.
